Beverly Hills Residents Concerned About Abortion Access to Address City Council Next Week

05.17.24 – (MEDIA ADVISORY) Please be advised that Beverly Hills and Los Angeles residents concerned about government transparency and abortion access will address the new City Council during its formal meeting next week.  The residents – led by bhforchoice – will demand accountability from the city council after public records request revealed that anti-abortion advocates and city officials appeared to work together to pressure a landlord to rescind the lease of DuPont Clinic, a Washington-DC based health care provider seeking to open an abortion clinic in Beverly Hills.

Bhforchoice is calling for an independent investigation with public disclosure into the allegations raised by the lawsuit brought by DuPont Clinic over the rescinded lease.

Background

In November 2023, bhforchoice made a public records request seeking correspondence between city officials, anti-abortion advocates, and others involved in influencing the decision to stop the opening of DuPont Clinic.  DuPont Clinic had plans to open a facility that would provide abortion care in accordance with California law but was notified that its lease had been rescinded after anti-abortion advocates threatened violence and intimidation.  The records request – which was made on behalf of bhforchoice by the Lawyering Project – appear to show that city officials and Dupont’s landlord acquiesced to the demands of anti-abortion groups.

DuPont Clinic is currently suing Beverly Hills and Douglas Emmett, Inc, the landlord that rescinded its lease.
